İDO Istanbul Sea Buses was established in 1987 by the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality to contribute to marine transportation in Istanbul and to help solve the traffic problem in the city.
According to Law No. 4046 on Privatization Practices, privatization of IDO with 100% block sale was completed on June 16, 2011, and the Company was acquired by TASS (Tepe-Akfen-Souter-Sera) consortium. Currently, IDO is owned by Akfen Holding (50%), and Tepe (50%). The joint venture paid US$ 861 million, signed the share purchase contract and acquired the shares of İDO.
İDO provides passenger and vehicle transportation services in Istanbul and the Marmara Sea region. With a modern fleet of 45 sea vessels (21 sea buses, 18 conventional ferries, 1 high speed ferry, 4 fast ferries, and 1 Service Ship ), İDO is one of the world’s leading marine passenger and vehicle transportation companies.
IDO operates a fleet with the capacity to transport 246,000 passengers and 39,000 vehicles daily, providing maritime transportation services to key transport locations within Istanbul and around the Sea of Marmara. IDO has the usage rights for most of the 35 piers it operates, with terms up to 30 years. The company, with its strong brand name, transports approximately 30 million passengers and 10 million vehicles.
In 2022, IDO added two ships on the Hatay-Cyprus route, and in 2023, it launched a ship on the Mersin-Hatay route. Following these services, IDO expanded its international routes in 2024 to include destinations in the Aegean Sea, organizing trips from Seferihisar, Kuşadası, and Bodrum to the islands of Samos, Leros, Kalymnos, and Patmos.

In 2010 IDO was awarded with the 2010 National Quality Grand Prize also at the Project Finance Awards 2011 organized by Euromoney, the İDO privatization transaction received the “European Transport Privatization Deal of the Year” award.
